Info about this season:
The Sophia Garden Red Sox were formed in 2006 by a mutinous Pontcanna Pirates splinter group lead by Silver Slugger winner Caitlin Davies. Caitlin went on to captain the team for the first two years and set up the core group of players still kicking up dust today. As local kids call them (seriously, kids in the park normally stop anything they\'re doing to back them up), \"The Sox\" are among the original non-corporate Cardiff Softball teams and as such have a tradition of forming close friendships with both new players and experienced vets looking to get back into the sport they love. Open to all, the team has had a noticeable international feel over the years and at one time or another have boasted players from Australia, the USA, Ireland, France, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand and even Swansea!
The Red Sox\'s core values have always been to introduce and support new players interested in the sport whilst creating a friendly atmosphere for all to play in. At the same time over the last two years the Red Sox have started to challenge the more traditional top teams and become a serious contender this year for some silverware! 2009\'s captain Mark \"Sonny\" Davies states \"I have always held the opinion that pretty much anyone has the capability inside them to play a sport well and I like to create an environment where they can get the chance to discover more about themselves and with a little encouragement absolutely excel at what they do.\"
The current core team of players are lead by last year\'s Golden Glove winner Holly Ireland. She hopes to carry on the tradition started by the founders. Her first and foremost concern is that fun was gratuitously had, and also that runs are gratuitously scored. She is pretty proud of the team this year, in particular that they are seen as a formidable, but friendly, group. |
