WrecK Tournament
Day 2
All Pages

When Friday 21 August 2009 opened with dark skies, torrential rain and localised flooding, it didn't look like promising start for the Eagles' first tournament. Reassurances from the organiser of the Bristol WrecK that the pitches were well drained was not the promise of blue skies and sunshine that we were hoping for. Having arrived at the venue later in the day and marked out an area for our village at the "quiet" end of the campsite, the process of tent erection left us in need of a drink and sustenance in preparation for what lay ahead. The Eagle kite was erected and flew high in the sky.

Saturday morning came (maybe a bit early for some), the Eagle had been stolen but the skies were clear(ish) brightened with a hot air balloon or two. We were hopeful that we wouldn’t disgrace ourselves (at least on the field). There was a certain amount of optimism as we prepared for our first game against the Chipmonks with a military style warm up. The Chipmonks, however, seemed very capable of defending their nuts and, assisted by one team member who possessed the lower limbs of Robocop, they were too difficult to crack. Our next opponents were the Bombay Dreamers, a team (legend has it) that were founded deep within a Clifton curry house. Whether their sponsors had them overloaded with naan breads I can't say but we did achieve our first win of the day. We were in buoyant mood for our next game against Rhythm. Sadly, they had it and we didn't.

And on to game four - our opponents - the Multiple Scoregasms. I have to say that I scarcely noticed their cute 3rd base fielder with a bum reminiscent of a young Kylie and the words "Kinky - Your Base or Mine" on her shirt, so she can't possibly have been a distraction to anyone. Our loss was just down to bad luck and/or bad calling by the BLU (boo). Multiple scoring deserted us in our last game (unless you count multiples of zero) and the Leicester Royals dealt us another defeat leaving us a respectable 5th in our league. (Did I mention that there were 5 teams in each league?).

With softball taking back seat, attention was turned to getting clean in advance of the for thcoming fancy dress party. Hot showers were as scarce as runs in our final game but the cold ones were ... refreshing. I was amazed at the transformations that took place behind closed tent flaps (think caterpillars to butterflies) and we presented ourselves to the world as gangsters and flappers from the film Chicago. The standard of fancy dress was outstanding, not just ourselves but all teams who entered with films as diverse as Flashdance, Treasure Island and Watership Down being represented (ok, maybe not Watership Down). My own favourite costume was worn by Saffie from our own Pontcanna Pirates who appeared to have come dressed as a box of Cadbury's Roses (sorry Saffie).

The true art of partying seems not to have reached the shores of North America as Merv was totally bemused by everyone sitting on the floor and “rowing” to the Gap Band and "Oops Upside Your Head" (Apparently teenagers in Canada still meet on street corners to practise their barn dancing skills). Back at the campsite, we lost Chris to the Pirates although they later pleaded that we take him back as he fell asleep in their camp and kept them awake with his snoring. Late became later and eventually turned into early before all was quiet once again (snoring excepted).
