The weather again has been the point of conversation on the website forum with damp, unsettled conditions to start the month but the sunshine we all appreciate started to shine towards the end of June. Regardless of the conditions, the league has continued but unfortunately the EADS Oddsox, have had to drop out due to a lack of players.
After some head scratching the fixtures have been re-arranged to ensure all 6 teams are playing every Wednesday from the 8th July onwards. The Cardiff Softball Finals Day has been moved forward to the 15th of August.
Other news, the Pontcanna Pirates are playing in the Bristol wRECk tournament on the 22nd and 23rd. Unfortunately the tournament is now full so we can't enter a Cardiff Softball team, however, there will be some top Softball action over the weekend. We suggest that anyone who is free that weekend takes a trip over to Bristol to watch a few games and take in the tournament experience.
June's games started on the 3rd with the Evershed Eagles taking on the MC Hammers and the SLR Sluggers hosting the Sophia Garden Red Sox. Regrettably the Sluggers could not get a team together so had to forfeit, resulting in a 7-0 win for the Red Sox. The Eagles continued their excellent form this year, comprehensively beating the Hammers 27:3.
The weather wiped out all the fixtures on the 10th but play resumed on the 17th with the Cardiff Cubs taking on the Pontcanna Pirates and the Sophia Garden Red Sox playing the MC Hammers. Both games turned out to be very close affairs!
The Cubs somewhat surprisingly edged the Pirates 9 runs to 7, with what can only be described as a wonderful pitching and defensive display. The Pirates can be a dangerous team if you allow players to get on base! Their chances to run you to death were kept to a minimum. Things were just as even on the other pitch with the score remaining even through out the game. The score in the final Red Sox innings was 11:12 to the hammers, with the Sox needing to score 2 runs to clinch the game. The lead off batter got aboard and scored with timely hits from the Sox batters. They then proceeded to load the bases with only1 out and the game tied at 12 all. A pressure at bat and a hit to the out field scored two runs and secured the game much to the joy of the Red Sox players!
