The morning after was not a joyous affair. One by one the team hatched themselves from their tents and quite frankly, it was a hideous sight. As we trudged towards pitch 4, we caught sight of the other team, the aptly named Scorgasms. They were already on the field doing this "warm-up" thing again and they all looked fresh as a daisy.
In true Pirate style though we decided to man-up to it and give it our best shot. In retrospect, we probably shouldn't have even bothered, we got absolutely hammered! O well, chalk it down to experience! Luckily, our Sunday reinforcements had turned up and after subbing out a few players who looked as though they had died, we put on a solid display against our next opponents, the Redbacks, to give us a final win in the round-robin stage. Our poor first game had cost us though: we ended up finishing fifth and missed out on a shot at the Cup. However, we still qualified for the Plate play-offs so we had something to aim for and we wouldn't have traded the night out for anything!
The semi-final saw us taking on the Cheltenham Old Spas. Our earlier game against them had been a close affair but by now we were a much different team. We now worked and communicated better and as a result, we cruised through to the final! The Plate final and the end of a long weekend saw us up against the Redbacks again. Everybody looked as though they had been through the wars but the subs led by Jane and Sasha shouted encouragement which kept us going throughout the match.
In one mighty innings, we racked up 8 runs as we went right through the batting order to give us a good lead going into the last fielding. Two quick outs and we were full of confidence; surely it can't be this easy? And it wasn't! We simply couldn't get the last out. As the Redbacks went over 10 runs for the innings our lead was down to next to nothing. And then it happened, a miss hit by one of their batters! Paul leapt from the pitchers plate onto the ball and launched it at first base where Jane was ready and waiting ..and it was all over, we had done it! With a narrow win of 20-16, we had won the Plate, a fantastic effort from the entire team!
