May's League Review
League Review - May
The weather has been the point of conversation on the website forum so far with May being very much a damp, unsettled month, and not the glorious sunshine we would all appreciate. Regardless of the inclement conditions, games have been played and the league is back in action for 2009!
The season had a warm up day on Saturday 9th, when a number of teams played friendly games. It was a successful day for last year's champions Evershed Eagles with a close win over the Sophia Garden Red Sox and a comprehensive win over the Cardiff Cubs. The Red Sox had a frustrating day with another close loss to the Pontcanna Pirates, last year's runners up. Despite the two narrow losses, Captain Mark Davies was very happy with how his team were bonding and for the new players on learning the game.
Week one started on the 13th May, with the Cardiff Cubs again playing the Evershed Eagles. Unfortunately, the score was very similar to the friendly day the weekend before with the Eagles wining 31-3! The leagues new team SLR Sluggers were up against the Pirates and while they were beaten 24-16 can be very proud of the way they played. The other scheduled game Sophia Garden Red Sox vs EADS Oddsox was postponed.
Week two saw the SLR Sluggers take on the Eagles, not an easy first few games for the new team! This time the Eagles pressed home their extra experience winning the games 32-4. The MC Hammers game with the Oddsox was a regrettable forfeit by the Oddsox, with the Hammers being awarded a 7-0 win.
The game of the day was the Pirates vs Red Sox. The Red Sox were looking to hit back after the narrow friendly defeat and played with true spirit. The score seesawed between the two teams and after 90 minutes and 5 innings the score was 12-12, the game went to a tie break. The Red Sox were first up, starting with a player on 2nd base, and in an incredible innings, they broke the game wide open, batting around the order and scoring 9 runs! The Pirates gamely tried to claw back the runs but were only able score 3 runs. Final score 21-15 to the Red Sox!
Week three saw the rain come and conditions were slippery at best, but safe to play. Confident after their win over the Pirates the Red Sox took on the Evershed Eagles, unfortunately, the game did not go the way of the Sox with a 21-7 loss. The Eagles played safe and made sure their fielding was up to scratch in difficult conditions and carried on their excellent form. There was another forfeit, this time by the Hammers who could not get enough players to brave the rain, the Pirates won by default. The other game due to be played was between the Cubs and Sluggers. They decided to postpone the game until later on in the summer.
The other notable event in May was the Pirates taking part in the BRI tournament in Bristol. The whole team had a very enjoyable weekend, but more of that in the article by Captain Adam! Here's looking forward to plenty of Sunshine and Games in June!
